Jacqueline Estran’s study is devoted to the Xinyue monthly (“Crescent Moon”) published by Xu Zhimo, Wen Yiduo, Hu Shi, Luo Longji and Liang Shiqiu from 1928 to 1933. It forms the fi rst exhaustive study of the journal and the related intellectual group and movement, the Crescent Moon Society. The author identifies the features characterizing Xinyue and its role in Chinese intellectual history and literature, and undertakes a detailed analysis of the content of the journal. The study is divided into two parts. The fi rst deals with (a) the precursors of Xinyue, its foundation and development (1923–1933); and (b) the journal's contributors, their role in the intellectual and literary world of the time, and the importance of the journal in their own achievements. The second part provides an in-depth analysis of the contribution of Xinyue to modern Chinese literature, with an examination of its literary content in the areas of poetry, theatre and fiction. The analysis touches upon sociological, literary, and historical matters, supplementing the overall approach to the intellectual group and movement with special focus on ist literary activity. Researchers will appreciate that the entire content of the journal (around 700 items) has been classified in two indexes, one by author’s name, in Chinese characters and pinyin; and one by subject and genre, in pinyin, French and English.
