In his latest study, Heinz A. Richter presents the development of the Cypriot Left from 1900 to the present. Beginning with the development of the trade unions, the political, economic, and social conditions are shown that led to the founding of the Communist Party of Cyprus (KKK) in 1926. After the 1931 riots, the KKK was banned but lived on underground and was transformed into AKEL (Progressive Party of the Working People), which is active today. The former cadre party developed into a mass party in the 1930s and 1940s.
Richter first presents the general historical development of Cyprus in each chapter, on the basis of which the development of the Cypriot left is then classified. The second part of the study describes the history of AKEL from the liberation struggle through the first years of the republic to the present day and takes a close look at the inner workings of the party.
