This series, originally called South China and Maritime Asia, contains monographs, translations and collective volumes which mainly deal with the history of coastal and insular Asia, especially with themes related to the role of China and its involvement in the maritime world. This concerns several fields of research: trade and politics, cultural and religious exchange, the maritime sphere in literary works, geography, archaeology, ethnology and natural history. Many of the studies published in this series bear an interdisciplinary character, some combine philological expertise and theoretical approaches. Languages of publication are German, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese and English. The series is open to a large variety of topics and not restricted to a particular school of thought.
