Aethiopica regards itself as an academic publication platform for the Horn of Africa, particularly Ethiopia and Eritrea. Topics range from linguistics, philology, history, archaeology to religion, ethnology, and arts. The general topic of this annual journal is the encounter of Semitic and African cultures of Christianity, Islam, and ideas of natural religions within the some 90 languages and peoples of this region which is often denoted a melting pot. Articles, reviews, overviews on recently published works, conference proceedings and research bibliographies are published in German, English, French, and Italian. The journal is peer-reviewed.

Aethiopica welcomes contributions on all aspects of linguistics, history, archeology, paleography, religion(s), traditional art and culture as well as ethnology (anthropology) in the Horn of Africa. Aethiopica contains 10-12 articles, review articles, reviews, dissertation abstracts, conference reports, personalia. These are written in English, German, French or Italian. This journal is peer-reviewed.
