Edited by the German Archaeological Institute

Sarcophagi are not only an essential part of the Roman imperial culture of funerals. In addition, the reliefs of imperial sarcophagi represent a central type of reference for iconographic, stylistic and culture historical questions within the area of research of Roman sculptures. The series Sarkophag-Studien belongs to the "Corpus der römischen Sarkophage" [Corpus of Roman Sarcophagi], an enterprise dedicated since the 19th century to investigating ancient sarcophagi under the aegis of the German Archaeological Institute. Since 2007, the project has been advanced by an international advisory board, on behalf of the central board of the DAI (German Archaeological Institute). Unlike the corpora books of the research project, the Sarcophagus Studies are meant to offer a platform for research approaches that are interpretation-oriented and cross-genre, published as proceedings, collections, or monographic papers. The series thus not only presents works on contextualization and a classification of sarcophagi and their decoration, considering aspects of historical and cultural sciences, but it is also a forum for new research and research problems in the area of research on sarcophagi and sarcophagus decoration.
