Over the past few years, the Harrassowitz Publishing House has published over 200 books and journals in Open Access in addition to the print edition. We are continually expanding this area in order to establish Open Access as an integral part of our publishing program in the long term.

As a long-established publishing house, we attach great importance to the academic quality and sustainability of our publications. The printed book therefore remains as the cornerstone of our range. We view Open Access as a complementary option within the context of a hybrid model.

We are pleased to offer you the opportunity to make your publication available via Open Access in addition to the print edition, regardless of whether it is a new release or a title from our backlist program. Provided that the technical and legal requirements are met, we will provide you with comprehensive advice and draw up a suitable offer for you. The Open Access option will, of course, be included in the contract. In doing so, we take the specific requirements of your funding bodies and academic institutions into account. Please let us know in good time which licenses from your funding bodies and academic institutions you are required to use. Your Open Access title will be published in a searchable and bookmarked PDF format in according to the standard for accessible e-books (PDF/UA v1 – ISO 14289-1).

We support both immediate Open Access (Gold) models and variants involving an embargo period (Green). We would be happy to work with you to assess whether your publication is eligible for Diamond Open Access (free of charge), considering funding opportunities, institutional policies and funding guidelines.

It is our goal to ensure the optimal visibility of your content in the digital space. We generally use Creative-Commons-licenses and can advise you on choosing the option that best suits your needs. We recommend the license CC BY-SA for academic titles because it provides the copyright holder with maximum visibility and reusability, protects, allows for adaptations, and at the same time ensures that derivative works also remain freely accessible. This ensures that your research remains part of an open knowledge cycle in the long term.

Your Open Access publication is available to download free of charge from our website, with details of the license used and a copyright statement. As the author, you will be credited with a by-line (“by author”).

Gold Open Access (direct Open Access):
Your work will be freely and permanently available online immediately upon publication. This ensures maximum visibility without any time restrictions.

Green Open Access (delayed Open Access):
You publish your work in the traditional way initially and make it freely accessible after an embargo period of, for example, one or two years.

Diamond Open Access (free of charge and direct Open Access):
Your work is accessible for free and long term online directly after publishing. Funding is provided by your institution or other sources of funding, ensuring maximum visibility and unrestricted access.

Embargo period:
An embargo period refers to the time between the initial publication of your work and its release into the public domain – typically one or two years. It allows exclusive use of the work initially, before it becomes available via Open Access.

Our Open Access publications are held to the same academic standards as our print titles. This standard is ensured through internal and external reviews whereas the peer review process is generally conducted as a double-blind review. The anonymity of both parties is also maintained when the publisher seeks external reviews. In all cases, manuscripts are only shared with the authors’ prior consent.

The Harrassowitz Publishing House ensures that the content of your publication (the entire work or individual chapters) is as accessible as possible, easy to find and therefore easy to cite. Against this background, precise and comprehensive metadata management is of crucial importance, particularly in the case of open access publications. Therefore, your Open Access titles are enriched with metadata and registered at Crossref and will shortly be sent to the relevant Open Access repositories, OAPEN and DOAB as well as the long-term archiving system Portico.

We store the following metadata for this purpose:

• Type of publication (academic publication / peer reviewed)
• Publication form (monograph vs. anthology / complete works vs. chapter)
• Basic bibliographic details
• Identifiers (In addition to the ISBN, which is already assigned to the print edition, the unique identifiers for your title include, for example, the author’s ORCID/ISNI and a DOI)
• Subject indexing
• Project and funding information
• Legal information

To collect this metadata, we ask our editors, authors and contributors to complete our questionnaires.

For the additional (or retrospective) publication of your article in Open Access, we charge an Open Access fee, which covers administrative and technical costs. As our publishing catalogue is very diverse and our titles vary in terms of both form and content, we calculate the applicable fees for each Open Access title on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the manuscript, the agreed Open Access model, the license and the associated costs. For monographs and edited volumes, the cost is generally between 1,000€ and 8,000€ (plus VAT); for articles in edited volumes or journals, we usually charge between 300€ and 600€ (plus VAT).
