Your Book at Harrassowitz
Book Production
We appreciate your interest in publishing your work with Harrassowitz Publishing House and are happy to assist you!

If your work is to be integrated into a book series, the decision on whether to include it in our catalogue will be made in close consultation with the series editors. In other cases, this is done based on internal or external reviews. Peer-Review procedures (often as double-blind reviews) are largely standard practice in our book series and publications. Manuscripts will only be shared with the authors’ prior consent.

As soon as your work has been accepted for publication, we will prepare a cost estimate and provide you with an offer, including open access if desired. Please calculate at least for weeks for this step. Depending on the scope, production specifications, subject matter and sales prospects, a printing subsidy may be required. You can either cover those costs yourself or apply to a funding body for a grant. We’d be happy to assist you with that: We will advise you, prepare the relevant preliminary and final calculations, and provide copies of the documents for the investor.

Once the financing has been sorted out, we will draw up a contract. Unfortunately, we are generally unable to pay for academic papers and articles, or for the publication of anthologies. However, we provide a generous allocation of complimentary copies and offer authors a discount on our entire catalogue. This also applies to publications with additional open access.

Once your publication has been accepted, we will ask you to complete the relevant questionnaire and return it to us:

Please refer to our guidelines for authors or editors for details of the production process for your publication:

The Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Publications with Harrassowitz Publishing House
Academic integrity and transparent publication standards are important for us. Therefore, we require our authors to disclose the use of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the creation of their manuscripts. The use of such tools is limited exclusively to language support – for example, for stylistic editing or to improve grammar and readability. On the contrary, it is not permitted to use AI for the independent creation of original academic content or the conduct of research on behalf of the authors. The mentioning of AI-systems as an author or co-author is also not possible. Every usage needs to be disclosed specifying the specific tool and its function in the manuscript for example, by means of a footnote reference or similar.

The handling of AI applications requires the highest level of data security. Therefore, we demand our authors not to share copyright-protected or confidential information with AI-systems. This applies without exception to all versions of the text, from the initial drafts right through to the final manuscript.

You, as the author, remain solely responsible for the content of the work you submit and publish. With the publication under your name, you confirm that you have carefully reviewed all the content and accept full responsibility for its accuracy, quality and academic integrity.

Marketing and Sales
We assign an ISBN to every book; if the title is part of a book series, it is also assigned to the relevant series ISSN. Furthermore, the long-term preservation of the books is ensured through the deposit of legal deposit copies with the German National Library (Deutsche Nationalbibliothek) and the Hesse State Library (Hessische Landesbibliothek).

The visibility of your book on the book market and the internet as well as at international trade fairs and academic conferences and events is important for us.

Therefore, your book will be featured in detail in our new publications catalogue, which we send out twice a year in a print run of over 3000 copies to booksellers, libraries, academic institutions and specialists both in Germany and abroad. It can also be found in our online shop as well as in one of our printed complete catalogues. In addition, there are individual advertisements in academic journals and leaflets. We also actively encourage book reviews, as a good review is the best form of advertising. We showcase our catalogue at the Frankfurt and Leipzig Book Fairs, as well as at international conferences and symposia, where interested parties have the opportunity to pick up a copy of your book and flick through it. Additionally, your book will be advertised as part of our social media presence on Instagram, Facebook, Bluesky and Mastodon.

We want your publication to sell as well as possible and reach as wide an audience as possible, which is why it is available through a wide range of distribution channels: It will be added to the “Verzeichnis lieferbarer Bücher” (VLB) as well as in the Wholesalers’ databases and is therefore readily available in bookshops. As a matter of course, it can also be ordered in our Online-Shop or directly at Harrassowitz Publishing House. Your book is also sold via the online retailer Amazon.

Libraries in Germany and abroad are supplied directly by our “sister company”, the book and journal agency Otto Harrassowitz GmbH & Co. KG. In the US, the UK and China, our representatives are also on the road on our behalf – and therefore on your behalf too. It is very important for us to ensure our books remain available for a long time. On average, they remain in stock for at least 15 years and, once sold out, can usually still be ordered as print-on-demand books.

E-Books
Most of our books and journals are published in parallel with the print edition as e-books in PDF format, with the standard for accessible e-books (PDF/UA v1 – ISO 14289-1), and are also optionally available as open access.

Each e-book is assigned to its own eISBN; titles published as part of a book series or journal are also assigned to a corresponding series eISSN. By depositing our e-books with the German National Library, their long-term preservation is ensured.

Our e-books are also ready to be downloaded directly through our online shop. The digital copies of our journals are hosted on our eLibrary and also available there. All contributions in anthologies and journal articles are assigned an individual DOI and can be purchased separately.

Furthermore, our e-books are provided via established platforms such as JSTOR, ProQuest (in collaboration with “Schweitzer Fachinformationen”) as well as Libri. An integration in other services such as Portico to ensure continued long-term availability is currently in preparation.

In addition to ProQuest, we also index our journals in Scopus, MLA and Web of Science.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to call us or send us an email. The Assistant of the Publishing Director, Ms. Höffeler, will be happy to provide you with further information or put you through to the relevant department: assistenz@harrassowitz.de / phone +49 (0)611-530 903
