The decades following the Thirty Years’ War were a time of almost continual military conflict in Europe, and the 1670s were especially turbulent. In the East, the Austrian Habsburgs faced a serious rebellion in Hungary, while in the West Louis XIV threatened to destabilize Europe by invading the Low Countries. Illustrated broadsheets chronicled these conflicts and provided the most readily available source of information for those interested in current news. Today, these broadsheets are one of the most valuable primary sources we have for this period, but because they are exceedingly rare and widely scattered they have been largely unavailable to scholars. This unique collection reproduces all of the known German political broadsheets from this time along with their models and copies – almost 400 full-page reproductions from 90 different collections in 15 countries.
