The conference proceedings contain 29 scholarly contributions to the 13th International Congress on the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East (ICAANE). The main themes of the congress were sustainability and inclusion in line with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals defined by the UN. The choice of themes was inspired by challenges for contemporary society. Sustainability includes understanding nature, water of life, talking through images, urbanism and different patterns of habitation innovation and resources all relating to the ancient Near East in Mesopotamia and West Asia. Furthermore, inclusive approaches to the management and understanding of cultural heritage were discussed with a focus on sharing the history of the past, the preservation of the remains of the Ancient Near East and the region’s World Heritage Site.
Volume 1 contains contributions relating to the themes of ‘Sustainability’, ‘Inclusion and Belonging’, and ‘Islamic Archaeology’. Volume 2 contains field reports from recent excavations and on Islamic archaeology.
