Subsidia et Instrumenta Linguarum Orientis (SILO) closes a gap in current teaching and research in the area of the less common and less frequently taught (ancient) Oriental languages. Unlike Arabic, Egyptian, Accadian or Hebrew, to name a few, these languages are not integral parts of degree programs: Demotic, Moabite, Coptic, Old Aramaic, Empire Aramaic, Nabataean, Phoenician, Punic, Luwian, Palmyrene, and many others.
Teachers of such languages face a number of problems when preparing their lessons: due to a lack of textbooks, grammars, training material and collections of texts, they have to compile their own curricula and material and do not receive any didactic support by existing concepts. Students and persons interested in (ancient) Oriental languages cannot find condensed books to study; beginners are rather deterred than motivated by academic works of reference.
SILO provides teachers with didactic concepts and teaching material, at the same time offering easily comprehensible and affordable learning aids: textbooks containing grammatical explanations and exercises for beginners and advanced students, teaching grammars, chrestomathies / text collections as well as restricted corpus dictionaries and glossaries. All SILO volumes have been thoroughly tested in academic teaching before being printed.
