The series Veröffentlichungen des Ostasien-Instituts der Ruhr-Universität Bochum (VOAI) has been published at Harrassowitz since it was launched in 1968. It features monographs, source editions, translations and volumes of collected essays from the research fields of linguistics, history, religious studies, and the philosophy of East Asia. It covers a range of topics such as the ritual of archery of the Western Zhou dynasty (1st millennium BC), the Japanese law code of the 8th century AD, ancient Korean poetry, and national identity building in contemporary China. Research on the materials collected by the famous early travelers and connoisseurs of Japan, Ph. F. and A. von Siebold, form a special focus of the series, entitled “Acta Sieboldiana”.
The VOAI comprises more than 70 volumes and is expanded by one to two volumes per year. Within the field of East Asian Studies in Europe, it is one of the most continuous and voluminous scholarly series with high visibility and relevance. Languages of publication are German and English.
