Beyond Conquest examines the history of the Mongol Empire within its broader Eurasian context, paying particular attention to the political, cultural, economic, and intellectual transformations that accompanied and followed the Mongol conquests. Through contributions by international scholars, the publication explores the material culture and written sources associated with Mongol rule in China, Iran, and Central Asia, thereby highlighting the regional diversity and interconnectedness of the Mongol world.
A central focus is the political and institutional development of the Mongol Empire. The contributions examine the decrees and legal principles of the khans, the establishment of political structures and forms of government based on the ulus, and the mechanisms through which Chinggisid rulers legitimized and consolidated their authority.
