Volume 6 of the Babil-series presents 142 editions of Neo- and Late Babylonian archival texts from tablet assemblages discovered by Robert Koldewey and his team in various areas of Babylon, including Išān-ʾAswad, ʿAmrān, Ṣaḥn, Homera, and sites beyond the maimounds as well as texts of uncertain provenance. These assemblages correspond to N15–N26, as originally categorised by Olof Pedersén in his book Archive und Bibliotheken in Babylon (2005).
The economic, legal, and administrative records and letters date from the reigns of Ashurbanipal and Šamaš-šumu-ukīn to the late Hellenistic period. The documents include promissory notes, sales contracts, receipts, guardianship and marriage contracts, a land registration document, a letter from Bēl-ibni (Ashurbanipal’s commander in Sealand) to the king, a price list for barley and dates, fragments about guard duties and the weavers’ prebend of the Esagil Temple, as well as a tablet written in an undeciphered script. The tablets provide valuable insights into daily life in the ancient metropolis during the first millennium BCE.
