The volume is a commemorative book offered to the world-renowned archaeologist and historian of ancient military history, Professor Nicholas V. Sekunda (University of Gdańsk) on the occasion of his 70th birthday (November 5, 2023).
The book contains 21 interesting and stimulating articles, written by the Professor's long-time friends and colleagues. The topics of these contributions, related to Honorand's interests and research, concern not only episodes in the history of the Middle East (Curtis, Ulanowski) and Greece (Kulesza, Manning and Fink, Olbrycht, Van Regenmortel). In addition to the studies devoted to purely military issues (Juhel, Lendon, Rankov), the reader will also find texts that address issues at the intersection of literature as historical source (historiography, biography, epigram, technical treatise – Cartledge, Burliga, Davies, Mojsik, Parker, Schellenberg, Shipley, Whitehead), archaeology (Jędraszek) and art history (Vickers). Themes on codicology (Rance) and on contemporary problems of returning works of art to the countries where they originally came from are covered as well (Taracha). Contributors include, among others, such renowned scholars as Paul Cartledge, John Davies, J.E. Lendon, Robert Parker, Philip Rance, Boris Rankov, D. Graham J. Shipley, Michael Vickers, and David Whitehead.
