This volume in honour of Michel Chauveau, Directeur d’études at the École Pratique des Hautes Études at Paris and holder of the chair of Demotic Studies from 1994 until his retirement in 2023, collects 27 articles in French, English, German and Italian provided by his friends, colleagues and former students; it also contains a bibliography of Chauveau with an index of the sources he covered in the published accounts of his courses at the EPHE.
Almost half of the contributions contain editions of demotic and Greek texts inscribed on papyrus, wooden tablets, stone ostraca, vessels and stelae; they cover the documentary, literary, religious and funerary genres. Other articles cover the history, language, script, literature or archaeology of Egypt, mainly in the first millennium BCE and the first centuries CE. Many of the studies offered in his honour align specifically with Michel Chauveau’s research interests, such as the edition of sources from the First Persian Period in Egypt (526‒404 BCE), the political history of Ptolemaic Egypt (332‒30 BCE), the logistics of human activities in the desert regions, or demotic and bilingual mummy labels. The volume is illustrated with numerous photographs and figures and features indices and glossaries which allow easy access to the various contributions. |
