Episteme
Edited by Gyburg Uhlmann
In this series, results from the SFB [Sonderforschungsbereich, Collaborative Research Center] 980 “Episteme in Bewegung” [Epistemes in Motion] are published. The task of this SFB is to investigate processes in change of knowledge in European and non-European pre-modern cultures. This phenomenon deserves special attention because knowledge in these cultures has been characterized as especially stable both in self-descriptions and descriptions from outside. The initial hypothesis states that change of knowledge is consistently taking place in these cultures. However, this often happens during long periods of time, imperceptibly and both as differentiation of already existing knowledge and as implicit integration of new knowledge. As a result, change of knowledge cannot be described using the instruments of traditional history of knowledge since the latter emerged from looking at indicators of ‘progress’ such as scenarios of disruption or revolution.
